On May 26, 2026, Roberta Gazzarata, a biomedical engineer at HL7 Europe and an IDEA4RC member, took part in the 2026 edition of the Medical Informatics Europe conference in Genova.
Roberta presented the work done to translate the IDEA4RC data model into a computable FHIR Implementation Guide (more on the use of FHIR for chronic disease management can be found here). Roberta highlighted how this work was primarily led by technological partners, with clinicians contributing to concept interpretation and providing feedback during the early stages of implementation. Compared to existing initiatives such as mCODE, IDEA4RC approach strengthens longitudinal and episode-based representation needed for European research contexts. The resulting IDEA4RC HL7 FHIR IG underpins robust rare cancer data sharing and paves the way for broader harmonization across oncology standards, including future convergence with the HL7 Cancer Common Model Project (more on this initiative can be found here).
