In this newsletter, we update you about the final plenary meeting of IDEA4RC, held in Madrid on June 24 and 25. We also share the highlights of the workshop IDEA4RC organised at the Ministry for Digitalization of the Community of Madrid to showcase the project’s solutions and discuss its impact. Finally, we look ahead to the “5 years EU Cancer Mission: Stronger Through Connection” conference, where IDEA4RC will be represented as the mission marks its fifth anniversary.

Inside IDEA4RC’s Final Plenary in Madrid |

At the end of June, the IDEA4RC consortium gathered in Madrid for its final plenary meeting ahead of the project’s review this autumn. Hosted by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), the two-day meeting brought together the eleven clinical centres and technical partners that, over four years, have worked to build a federated platform for the re-use of clinical data on two types of rare cancers, sarcomas and head and neck cancers.
Opening the meeting, project coordinator Annalisa Trama, epidemiologist at the National Cancer Institute of Milan, offered a reflection that set the tone for the two days: a sound legal framework for sharing health data across borders is necessary, but on its own it is not enough. Re-using clinical data for research effectively and responsibly also requires technical capacity, careful data preparation and computing resources. That is a lesson the consortium believes is relevant well beyond IDEA4RC, as the European Health Data Space enters into force.

On 23 June, IDEA4RC presented its results to researchers, clinicians and policymakers at a public event hosted by the Ministry for Digitalization of the Community of Madrid, covering the project’s zero-trust architecture, the use of large language models on clinical text, and how IDEA4RC fits within the wider EU Cancer Mission landscape. The highlights of the discussion are available here. |

Eugenio Gaeta, technical manager of the project, will bring IDEA4RC to the conference “5 years EU Cancer Mission: Stronger Through Connection” that will take place from 29 September to 1 October 2026 in Brussels. The conference will bring together researchers, clinicians, policymakers, patients, innovators, funders and industry representatives in Brussels to mark five years of the EU Cancer Mission and look at the road ahead to fully achieve its 2030 goal.
